How Contre Le Mur is not your normal art gallery- part deux!

Now that we have talked about finding and living with what works for you, this is where we come in! We are not a traditional gallery, we don't represent specific artists or art styles. Nor are we an auction house. Rather we are a group of folks who grew up surrounded by artists , and understand the backstory of how and why art is created. We have been avid hunters and collectors of other antiques for many years and watched how often wonderful artworks where overlooked and ignored in many of the auctions, and estate sales we frequented. Often we would wind up with an overlooked or ignored piece or two going home with us.

As our impromptu art collection stated growing, we realized that while Contre Le Mur had other initial business goals, art in all of its forms, was its real passion. However, the passion was the process finding of wonderful pieces across all prices and styles, that had been overlooked or ignored by others, and finding them new forever homes.

How we do this is simple. We travel the county, poking into dark, dusty and dirty places looking for those wonderful pieces to complement all types and styles of homes. Once they get home, we look for their back story to share with you. Finally we price them so that everyone can have a piece of wonderful art that they love in their home. Contre Le Mur wants art to find its way to you, and you to love your art. Below is a terrific story of what hunting can find!

The lovely image above is a painting from the artist Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931), which was found in 2010 inside an "abandoned" Paris apartment. Why "abandoned", well the owner had moved out before the outbreak of World War II, and never returned, but continued to pay for the space until their death in 2010. When the apartment was finally entered, this painting was found. Although it never was found in Boldini's catalogue raisonne', letters from the artist found in the apartment documented its authenticity. It later sold for 2.5 million at auction. Two interesting notes about Boldini, first he was nicknamed the "master of swish" for his flowing lines, and second he is the artist who painted Consuelo Vanderbilt.

This story is thanks to Alux, a fantastic site we at Contre Le Mur can't recommend highly enough!

Art Term alert!!

A catalogue raisonné is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known works of an artist either in a particular medium or all media.
